Using Christ-Centered Curriculum Level C
1. First, read pages iii-x in the Phonics Drill Reader. 2. Read the "Introduction" page in the Phonics Workbook Instruction & Answer Key C:1 3. Proceed through the workbooks at a pace comfortable for your child, as you begin following the lesson plans in the Phonics Lessons 32-66 and the subsequent books. • You will see there are verses and phrases throughout the workbook that the child is supposed to trace. You might want to have your child print them in a separate notebook. You might want to have him memorize the passages. For sure you need to discuss them. • If your child is capable of printing or writing at a smaller size than the lines dictate, have them use just the bottom portion of the lines (ie. write between the two bottom lines and ignore the top one). Older children can use cursive writing instead of printing. • I recommend having the child memorize as many of the phonics rules as possible as they are introduced. The rules are listed in the back of the Drill Reader, starting on page 125. • Use the Drill Reader as a tool. There are no specific directions in the phonics lesson guides as to its use. It is helpful for increasing reading speed and for spelling as each lesson is centred around specific spelling rules. Discuss with the child, as appropriate, the Latin suffixes and prefixes and their impact on root words. See the Drill Reader ideas on the accompanying page. • Encourage your child to start his/her own "dictionary" as he/she looks up definitions and writes them out in a separate workbook. You might want to divide the book alphabetically. I would get a good thick book or use loose leaf paper in a binder (probably the easiest). Have the child write a sentence for each word or try to incorporate several words into one sentence. Writing paragraphs using the word lists is also good practice.** (see note directly below) • Be sure to discuss the scriptural concepts so that you are building academic knowledge on foundations of Biblical wisdom. • Use the Drill Reader as a tool and get as much out of it as you can! Use your imagination.
